About the Salt River and Why It Is Perfect For Engagement Photos

The Salt River is a 200-mile river that provides the majority of water supply to greater Phoenix and is an iconic part of Arizona! Canals, pipelines, and reservoirs branching out from the river create many nearby lakes, such as Saguaro, Canyon, Apache, and Roosevelt lakes, which all act as reservoirs for the Salt River. A more widely known river segment is about 40 minutes from downtown Phoenix, formerly known as the lower Salt River. The most popular things about the salt river are its tubing adventures and possibilities and the wild horses! Currently, Visit Phoenix manages The Salt River. This nonprofit organization promotes the greater Phoenix community to a more global audience of travelers and inspires visitors. The lower Salt River passes through the Tonto National Forest, which does require a recreational day pass to explore the area.

Specialty

Earlier, I mentioned that the Salt River featured wild horses, and it’s true! Along an 18-mile stretch of the river, mustangs, or wild horses, call this area home! These wild horses are thought to be descendants of Spanish horses that were brought to Arizona in the 17th century by Spanish missionaries. The government established Tonto National Forest in 1902. But the horses lived in the area long before then! Estimations show less than 500 wild horses remain in Arizona.

The horses most commonly visit Saguaro lake, including three recreation areas. The best time to get a good look at these horses is within 2 to 3 hours of sunrise and sunset when the weather is cooler. What a cool and beautiful surprise the Salt River has to offer your engagement photos! There are few places to find wild horses, making this a truly unique location!
